How many gears does a 700r4 have?

How many gears does a 700r4 have?
I was reading some of the threads here and came across a few in which one person stated that a 700r4 does not have 4 individual gears, rather it has 3 then 4th gear is actually when the TC locks up. I am quite sure I can feel one more 3rd shift in there when my car is in OD and then a lock up. When you pass a car on the highway, if you dont push the pedal too hard you can feel the TC unlock, then at a constant speed it locks up again.

It has 4 speeds; 3rd is direct, 4th is OD; and of course the clutch, which comes on in 3rd and 4th only.
