700-r4 dying.......

well it looks like my tranny is finally giving up 88' ROC. i posted a while back that when it was cold it would not go into gear when in OD postion. if in the D postion the transmission would go into gear. now yesterday when i put it in the D postion it would not go into gear. i was oh ****, something is definitely wrong. so i drive it drives normally, shifts like it always has(like a pillow) soft, but no slipping. well i then proceed to do some other tests. WOT and engine braking. well here comes the bad news. WOT o.k. while in od it shifts into OD @ WOT @ 90MPH. never used to shift in OD @ WOT @ any speed. when i "drop" the gear going 30mph from D to 1 nothing. it freewheels then catches up around 4500. damn. even going 40 dropping it into second it does the same thing. no engine braking. on the way home it right now, it did work the way it should. dropping into second going 40 the rpms came up and felt as it should. tried it with first going 25-30 and engine braked as it should.

my question here is what could be wrong?

i searched and came up with these conclusions..........

is it the overrun clutches?

could it be a bad sprag? unlikely right since it does "engine brake" once in a while. more than likely the clutches.

i will be rebuilding this thing myself so i just need pointers as to what maybe the problem. so when i open it up there will be no suprises.

the fluid is a red color with a sweet smell to it. it is at the appriorate level.

The input sprag and or clutch assembly is gone. This will cause the above problem. There is an updated sprag assembly for this.
