Manual tranny fluid check

I understand that the transmission fluid on a manual is checked by removing a plug from the side of the transmission case. I want to be sure that I found the plug. Is it on the right side of the transmission case (driver’s side of the car), somewhat high, and above an electrical sensor which is also plugged into the transmission case? This plug is not a nut or bolt, like on the motor oil pan, but a big screw which is turned with, not a flat-head or Phillips-head, but the six-point-star head (Allen-head?).

Am I right? Did I find the plug?

PS: It’s a stock 92 Camaro RS with the 305 V8

That's the one. Should be about 3/4" in diameter.

NO!!!!! Not that one!! That's not a plug, that's a pin that a piece of the shift linkage sits on. If you take that out the piece will fall out and you'll have to tear the trans down to put it back in.

The one you want is on the pass side. There are no electrical connectors anywhere near it. It's about halfway up. Should be a 3/8" square drive. There's another similar one at the bottom of the same side of the case for draining it.

Thanks RB83L69. The square drive plugs on the right side of the transmission case, got it.

If it needs lubricant, would you use Automatic Transmission Fluid or Gear Oil? Which lubricant did the car originally come with?
