Vibration at 85 MPH

I have a vibration when my engine is under a load at 85 mph and above. By load, I mean going up a slight grade on the Interstate. Going down a grade it stops. I have had the tires balanced twice, with no change either time. Has anyone had a similar problem? Or would anyone know where to start looking for a possible culprit?

for some reason i get a vibration when im going over 140km's (i have no idea what the conversion would be) but i would asume it has something to do with my slightly bent axel shaft on my drivers side, jack up your rear end, turn on your car and put it in drive. then hop out and check if your tires are wobbeling around(this works better if you have a friend to check while you sit in the car getting the brakes ready ) im not entirely sure this would be the cause though. mabey its your shocks/struts?

The shocks are new. Shouldn't be that, but I will check the axels.

How are the tires? When tires get worn they could cause problems like that. Just a thought.

The tires are fairly new, less than 10,000 miles on them.

anybody ever thought that it might be the exhaust shaking.... ive had similar vibrations in my last 2 chevys....always when your going up a hill or sumtin...and you can get rid of it by giving it a healthy amount of gas...

ive always thought it was the exhaust...and since my muffler and tailpipes are off right now ive had no more vibrations.

could be a flat spot on the tires from stomping the brakes, could be warped rotors, could be a tire is off balance, could be a bent axle shaft, could be a bent or off balance driveshaft, a bent rim, or a messed up spindle. I suppose it could also be a gear or shaft in the trans bent or off balance, but I don't know much about that area Basically anything that rotates on the car could be a culprit.

Good luck finding it,
Matt

my car does this also at 140kmh and higher, if i give gas it vibrate a bit less, let go the gas and woaahhh crazy vibes, not pleasent at all. rims balancement is not perfect, but look good enough, after the exaust swap it felt better, before it was at 120kmh.

I'll check it on a lift when i can.

If they have slop, they'll cause higher speed vibrations in the front.

If it's in the rear, worn out bearings will do the same.

jack up your rear end, turn on your car and put it in drive. then hop out and check if your tires are wobbeling around
Please do not try this if you do not know what your doing..Just have an image in my head thats all..some 14 yo tries it on ramps instead of stands...

OK check the u-joints...then HAS the driveshaft been OUT before....EVER????

If the driveshaft is 180 OUT of sync with the rear this will happen....I put my shaft back in once not paying attention to the PAINT COLORS and ran it up the road...ABout 85-90 MPH it would SHAKE pretty good.... All I did was like up YELLOW paint sde to YEllow side of the rear and it went away...I was 180 OUT initially..

GM paints i side of the DS and 1 side of the rear yoke YEllow ...you must match yellow to yellow.....Has to do with how the drivetrain was balanced..

I have a Pace-Setter exhaust. I'm sure it can handle everything my 305 can throw at it.

The drive shaft has been out. I will check the marks.

Thanks

yeah but do you have the exhaust in there really tight...it can still vibrate around alot of times.

thats actualy really interesting (the drive shaft being unbalenced) i know for a fact mine has been out before, but i had no idea it needed to go back in a certain way. im gona check that out. ive been under there countless times and never saw any paint to match up though.....

I've never seen it on a thirdgen either, but if I remember right my 2001 TA had it. I don't know if all the 4th gens do though

I have the exact!!! same problem. The only thing that I have not replaced is the control and panhard bushings. I thought maybe the pinion angle is off under throttle. my vibratiion starts at 70 mph. I thought it had something to do with the tranny or clutch because I would push in the clutch or put it in nuetral and it would stop. Finnally I realized it just vibrates when there is torque on the drivetrain, Like going up a hill. I can decend a hill at the same speed and it will not vibrate. Also the vibration is not engine rpm related becuaue I can drop from 6th to 5th and it still vibrates. Good luck maybe somebody can answer both of our problems
