just ordered SLP posi..

Hey guys I just ordered te SLP posi unit for 99.95 and the guy told me that I need to change the outside carrier bearings before i have it put in. Now if these things only have liek 5 mile son them then why are the bearings bad?? Also I ordered the Richmond gear instal kit for 95 bucks from summit. Does anyone know if it comes with these bearings?? I also got richmond 3.73's and some lakewood LCA along with a edel. panhard rod. Thanks for any input guys. Oh yea, how much should I expect to pay to get gears and a posi unit installed in a rear thats already out of the car?? thanks again

Yes it includes those bearings.

I'd figure on about 2.5 - 3 hours of time at whatever your shop's labor rate is; probably $60-70 / hr.; $150-180 ought to be close.

SLP oem Take-off rear - bearings

First, the SLP take offs were generally from vehicles straight from GM, being modified prior to going to dealers. Generally less than a couple of rolling miles your right.

But, the reason you want to replace the bearings is because when SLP pulled them out of the new GM axles (For cars SLP was adding SLP content), they take them and put them in containers with other diffs and bearings. There is absolutely no guarantee that the loose outer bearing race will be the matched component that was with the inner bearing during manufacturing or initial assembly. Not a good idea to mix & match. Slight manufacturing differences, or even nicks from being loose tends to cause failures.

As the original post said, the source was SLP, the site is http://slpeng.com/

being that SLP was gettin these units out of SS Camaros, and then selling them, since GM no longer makes the Camaro/Firebird... there are no longer any of these units to be gotten out of the cars and sold...

so how are they still selling them? for a long time they just told people they were on backorder

For some time, they had a stock of the units, but were missing some little piece that you need to put it in with.... they have the little piece in stock again now.... but you're right, they won't last forever, and when they're gone, they're gone.

When I received the SLP unit no bearing races came with it. I did have to replace one damaged bearing and clean the other. The damaged bearing looked like it had been set down hard on the cage, severely bending it. Both bearings had grit/dirt in them requiring the remaining one to be cleaned.

One new bearing, two new races and it was off to the races!
