will this rear end / gear swap work?

ok.. i have the good old 10 bolt on my car but built nicely and it has a 3.42 posi in it. i got a rear end out of a 2000 SS that has damn near new 3.73's and a posi for free ( i jsut wanted the gers). is there any way i can just swap the gears or do i have to swap the carrier as well?? what all is needed.. cuase im pretty sure the 2k SS rear end wont bolt up to my car.

You will need to change the ring gear , carrier and pinion. The 2000 has anti-lock brakes, the 1986 does not. You will have to do another set up when you put the 2000 ring gear and pinion in the '86 housing. Don't unbolt the 2000ring gear from the 2000 carrier unless the '86 posi carrier is better than the '00 posi.

you might want to consider the differance in spline count on your 86 axles and the 2000 carrier before you get to far into it

hey whoa whoa hope your not to far along yet the 4th gen year will bolt directly in to your car the gears are not changable even though the 00 had abs that has nothing to do with the calipers o yeah the only thing is the 4th gen is 3 to 4 inches wider so the tires will stick out a little but that look cool
