1988 IROC Wheel Stampings

Can someone explain to me why the IROC wheels are stamped "FRONT" and "REAR"? Am I to assume that they can only be rotated from side to side? I was discussing this with my brother and I cannot figure out why the wheels would be stamped that way if they are all 16x8 wheels. Are the wheels different or did GM just feel like stamping that for the heck of it?

The front and rear wheels have different offset.

Ahhh that explains it. I don't have an IROC myself to be able to see why the offset is different. What causes the front and rear offset to differ?
