Dumb Question kickdown cable?

Dumb Question kickdown cable?
When i took my engine out the tranny kickdown cable got hooked on somethin and it ripped the plastic coating off of it and the cable broke, since the kickdown is anoying could i just keep it unhooked( IF i wanted the car to downshift i would downshift it my self) Is my way of looking at it. Ive heard this is ok And ive heard it will cause trany damage, Please help guys!

If it's anything newer than '83 then the kickdown controlls the up-shift as well as the down shift. With out the cable the tranny won't know how much throttle you have=don't know when to shift=
Changing it shouldn't cost more than $30 and take more than an hour, it's defenitely worth it.
