New rear end = Crazy Spedo, Squeaky Brakes?

Hey I got a new rear end in my ride about a month and a half ago or so. Its basically the stock 92 RS 2.73 Drum rear.
Since then the spedo is weird, it doesnt work at all til the car gets warmed up and then it will wait til I get up to about thirty and jump up . After that it kinda falls down and then jumps up to the speed im goin. I thought the spedo was connected to the tranny, so this confuses me. If it connects to the rear then im thinking maybee the new rear had some nasty dried up grease around the cable or something? My Chiltons book would help on this one but unfortunately im stupid and left it at my parents house...

Also the rear brakes have been squeakin/creaking like crazy. My mechanic said he was putting something on them to clean them and they would squeak for awhile. Its like insanely annoying tho and doesnt seem to be letting up. Ive probably drivenn it about 250 miles since the rear was installed. Like the spedo its not as bad one ive driven for awhile. Kinda sounds like its just the drivers side drum too, but im not sure. Anything I can do to lessen this, maybee scrub it with a wire brush or something? Or could it be something (ie rust) stuck in between the shoe and the drum? Probably gonna take it apart this weekend to see, but just wanted some tips so I had something to do when its apart.

Any insight is appreciated!

Well, there's part of your problem (although unrelated) right there... burn your Chilton's manual and get a Helm (factory)manual. You will thank yourself everytime it comes in handy (which is about 3,422,765 more times than the Chilton will).

The speedo is indeed connected the tranny, so it may just be coincidental that the speedo started acting up after the rear install.

Regarding the brakes, something is definitely wrong there. I'm not sure that I've ever heard drum brakes that weren't shot or severely glazed squeal (I could be wrong here). What causes most disc brakes to squeal is a high-frequency vibration of the disc pad within the caliper. AFAIK, this is not an issue with drum brakes.
