gear whine=friction?

I've been thinking lately, just wondering if the whining sound some ring and pinions produce are caused by excess friction when they mesh? Am I totally off base here? To me, whine=friction=loss in power=slower, lol. Is my thinking totally offbase?

yeah you're totally off base. if the gear set is installed correctly the whine is usually caused by the angle the gears are cut on. richmonds are known to while and are straighter cut than most other gears.

I have richmond 3.73 and they whine like crazy. Ithought maybe they were installed wrong or not enough diff fluid so i drained the fluid and put in some redline and they still whine like crazy. But i have had them for like 8 months now and have changed the fluid once more since the enitial time and there is never any metal shvings in the fluid . I guess they just whine ................. just turnup your stereo ..... lol
