transmission needs help!!!

Hey I have a 87 GTA and the transmission is stock. Does anyone know how much it would cost to get a new one or used for a good price? I would fix it myself or get it rebuilt but i don'e know what is really wrong with it. It won't go above 40mph and it wants to stick in 2nd gear. I can't get it to change gears after that. Is there anything I can do? If you have any answers e-mail me or post back. Thanks.

you could try to change the fliud and filter... seems like its taking a crap on you though...the infamous 3-4 clutch pack failure

a junkyard 700r4 when i priced them ranged from $75-$125, that is the transmission you have correct?

a rebuild (non-performance wise) is around $500-$650 when i priced them... a performance rebuild goes from 1k up, depending on what u get done.

It's on its way out. I would go for a thorough rebuild, because you never know what you're getting with a junkyard trans. Plus, the '87 trans is a good unit. The earlier one had a bad rep, but the '87-up ones are a lot better. I put over 130,000 miles on the one in my Blazer, with the last 20,000 behind a roller cammed, Edelbrock headed 350. I actually blew a rear before the trans went bad. Now I'm just going to rebuild it with good parts from Summit.

Jet and Hughes sell them for over $1,500 rebuilt with all the good stuff, but minus a converter, which you will need to change too, plus flushing the cooler lines with solvent.

Around here I can get a guy to rebuild one to stock for $250, but the going rate is a lot higher than that. I just happen to know a guy that builds them in his spare time. He works for G.E.R., so he deals with them all day long and rebuilding one is simple for him.

you also dont know what you'll get put in n charged for going to an tranny shop, plus you dont know whether your $ ($250 isnt rebuilding much) is even going to work/last either...

i paid $75 for my junkyard tranny, it hauls *** n still is kicking... ran it all summer... paid 1k for a tranny shop to "performance" build it, 3-4 clutches fried in a few months (after of course the lil warranty went out)

ask around junk yards, i know alot of people will give u a new one if the old dont work... saves u money n hassel in some manners
