1987 Firebird trans

How do I tell what kind of transmission I have
1987 Firebird 5.0 w/ Carb

Car: 86Z/92 RS Camaro
Engine: 357 vortec finished. need tuning
Transmission: Still works
Axle/Gears: need 3.73
If your **** has a button on top and needs to be depressed to move the shifter, you have 700R4. If no **** and have 3 pedals, you have the 5 speed manual.

Transmission: T56, 5-speed, 700R4, C4, T176, semi-auto 2-speed
Axle/Gears: 3.73, 3.90, 4.88, 3.55, 3.54, 7.00
Yeah. Buck up though the '87 and up 700R4s are much better than the earlier ones due to the revised valvebody, and a host of other improvements. Actually, GM kept improving the trans year after year until it transitioned to the 4L60E, and then the 4L65E.
