Would manually shifting make any difference to the life span of my tranny?

All those questions are loaded.
I don't think manually shifting will hurt the trans.
A shift kit will make the trans shift harder and faster, as well as giving you full manual control over the shifting if you choose.
The HP limit of your '86 trans is considerably less than an '87-up unit. The 700R4 got better with time. More 3-4 clutches, revised valvebody, auxilary valvebody, and a few other things. The stock trans in my '86 couldn't even handle a mild 350 and started slipping right after I got the engine running right. The stock trans in my Blazer had 130,000 miles of flogging on it before it finally gave up the ghost. That was in a 4X4 truck with a 350HP -420lbs/ft. small block for the last 25,000 miles of it's life. At 110,000 I added a shift kit and changed the converter when I swapped out the 305 for the built 350. I actually blew a rear before the trans died.
With the current parts available I'm sure the 700R4 can be built to handle over 600+HP, but ProBuilt is really the guy to ask. I've learned something new from every one of his posts.
