TH400 to 700R4 not shifting to OD!
Hey guys, I just thought I'd post this to see if I can help my Uncle out.
He has an 86 Chevy P/U with a 350 TBI.
It originally had a TH400, that starting acting up.
He got a really good deal on a rebuilt 700R4 and decided to put that in.
For some reason it's not kicking in to the last gear, overdrive.
They checked the wires and said one of them didn't stay hot, that it was only hot when you turned the key on. Not sure if that helps.
My dad helped him install it, but he's really good with the older non-electronic transmissions.

700R4's are mechanical so its not a wire its something internal. I would have a shop check it out. I had bought a "rebuilt" 700R4 that was giving me problems. I had a guy I know personally that I trust check it out and he said parts were missing and put in backwards and things. So now I know its properly done. Does your consol show the 4th gear? Can you manualy shift it to 4th gear? Try that... Mine doesnt have a 4th gear on the consol because the idiot that had my car first put a 3 speed ratchet shifter in it. I have to rely on it going into 4th itself. Mine shifts into 4th somewhere around 3 grand I think it is when its been at 3 grand for a bit on the highway.

I Assume that the shifter is meant for OD. Is there a tv cable on this? The tranny will do weird things without that not to mention smoke its self.

Since there really isn't any electronics involved, I tell him he may want to get it checked out.

Transmission: ProBuilt 700R4 Road Race with Edge 9.5" 2800 stall lockup converter
There are electronics to an extent. The lockup in overdrive won't work with out a lockup switch. There are kits available to hook it up. However, it should go into 4th (just not lockup the converter)as is ..... if it has the correct shifter.
It might also need a different computer or chip in order for it to work without the aforementioned switch. I don't know if the computer in your vehicle has the correct wiring.....

kinda off topic but does anyone happen to know what 5th gear ratio in a 1991 1500 P/U? would it be the same as the T5 in the camaro?
