Transmission slipping, opinions please

I have the good lo' 700r4 auto. I'm assuming it's the original transmission with 212,ooo miles on it, so it's not suprise it's going out. I'd like to see what I could do to prolong it's demise.

While driving in OD, it starts off fine, shudders pretty bad between 40 and 50 mph, than smooths out once I get to 60 mph or faster. In town, I downshift to D to go 40-50 mph, and so it shudders the same way between 30-40 mph. I've had transmissions go bad before, but I've never had any of them do anything this goofy. I'm wondering if there is anything I can adjust to get as many more miles out of it as possible. The TV cable? Torque converter? Is there any transmission additive that might help?

I had the fluid changed a few months ago, which is already turning brown and was down a pint. (There are never any puddled of anything under the car.) I took it to an old friend at a quick lube place and he changed it for free after hours. These quick lube places have a new way of changing the fluid like a blood transfusion. They pump a few gallons of tranny fluid through the whole system while the engine is running. It seemed pretty clever until I realized that this means they never change the filter. I was thinking of putting magnets on the bottom of the pan to collect any shrapnel collecting in there. Has anyone ever tried this?

Any suggestions woould be appretiated.

you 'could' try the lucas tranny additive... i've read people liking it and i've read people think its worthless...

changing the filter would surely have helped.... and I know that some stock 700-r4s already come with a magnet at the bottom of the pan, when i took both pans of my 700r4's they had them in it.. very helpful in my eyes.

thats alot of miles if that is in fact the stock tranny for a stock 700r4... when its start 'shuddering' let off the gas n let whatever lil bit of clutch surface you have grab then go from there...

you can attempt to masterbate the tv cable but i doubt its that if it just recently started doing it.. wouldnt hurt to try.

It might be the convertor trying to lockup also. That can cause some shuddering until it finally does its business.

Hey, I never thought of the torque converter. I'll have to look at it.

OK thanks guys. I'll try the lucas stuff and just drive it until it dies. It's not my daily driver anymore, so it may last awhile longer.

it could also be the VCC which controls the torque conv. lock up at 35-40mph and 50 - 60mph or there abouts ask Vader he had a post on it a while ago.

The 700 in my Formula has the 35-45mph shudder to it... My mechanic figures its the torque coverter-- won't matter in another week or so when my Pro-Built tranny and Vigilante converter arrive

I worked on the car today. I changed the plug wires and stuff. Then I added some generic transmission treatment I happened to have while I was at it. It doesn't shudder at all anymore! Go figure.
