2.73 to 3.42's quick "pregunta"

alright.... I have an 87 v6 auto w/ 3.42's in my garage that's going to the junkyard in a few weeks(blown engine)

my car is an 87 lg4 auto w/ 2.73's( )

here's the question.... can i use the speedo gears out of the v6 700 in my v8 700 if i were to change the rear end gears?

and secondly would it be easier to change the whole rear end or just the gears?

3rd, where's the speedo gears located in the tranny? the local cops are really **** and will pull u over for anything, i can't afford my second speeding ticket.

btw, sorry i didn't do a search, but i gotta get to bed.

stupid question but thanks,

Brandon

I dont know anything about the speedo stuff your talking about...but if i were u i would just change the rears...direct bolt in and leaves no room for mistake with the gears...IMO

If you can't get the speedo gears swapped, just learn the conversion and estimate your speed... should be alright until you get it physically converted.

Change the rearends. It's a lot easier and as 85camaro said, you don't have to worry about mistakes. Changing gears can be too problematic.

Yes you can swap the speedo gears. Both of them should have electronic speedo with VSS in the trans.

It's a whole lot more work and trouble to swap gears than to change over the whole rear.

Jsut change the whole rear, rather than the gears; and put the 3.42 speedo gears into the 2.73 car along with the other rear.

hey thanks for the input. where would it be physically best on the car to put the jackstands? If i were to swap the entire rear end, how long would you estimate this would take, a couple hours? i was looking to get new shocks too, this would be the best time to switch them then right?

thanks again,
brandon

jack up your car by the rear end...put jackstands under the axles, unbolt everything...then have a friend help u, and jack up the rear again, take out the stands and slowly jack it down with u and ur friend holding it steady

85camaro350, thanks for the advice. i presume u'd wanna leave the wheels on it correct? they're going on mine anyways, all 4 tires have 300 miles on them....

I've got two weeks to get everthing i want from this car, then its being shipped away. its sat around here too long and dads getting rid of it....

btw, anyone have info on getting to the speedo gears?

thanks again,
brandon

well off of the v6 i'm taking the dash, entire black(!) interior, tires and wheels, and the rear end so far. I kinda want to take the tires off this one and put them on the nicer rims on my car. that'll be a pain to switch each tire and wheel

anyways, anyone got the goods on the speedo gears?
thanks again,
Brandon

Whenever I swap the rearend out, I always position the jackstands under the frame rails where the lower control arms attach. You can do this and position the floor jack under the center of the rearend to move it up and down while unbolting the lower end of the shocks and removing the control arm and torque arm bolts.
