700R4 - how long is it gonna last?
700R4 - how long is it gonna last?
Just wondering if some people could guess at how much life my 86 Caprice's 700R4 has left in it. It has about 130k on it. Driving easy it shifts into every gear good and firm and the lockup torque converter seems to work okay. If I get on the gas any more than a normal amount it seems to slip for just a split second and then firmly grabs the shift. It does the exact same under full throttle.
Third gear grabs hard no matter what and fourth always feels fine. Fluid looks fine and everything. It has just about 200,000km (I'm Canadian) and my friend bought it with 120,000. I think its been shifting the same the entire time he's had it. I adjusted the tv cable a bit when I first got it, it was shifting too early and soft, works a lot better now and shift points seem right although occasionally it will shift to 2nd a bit early under half throttle. And sometimes it won't get a downshift from 4th to 2nd when it really should. Any guesses?
My other tranny is a 2004R in my Cutlass and it shifts real hard cuz i've got 3.73 gears and adjusted the tv cable for harder shifts, but it doesn't go into drive or reverse as fast as the 700 does. Theres a bit of a delay, whereas the 700 makes the car jump as soon as you throw it in gear. Also sometimes the 2004R won't go into gear right away when hot. So the 2 of them are about opposites, I don't know which one is worse. LOL
