I've rebuilt automatics, but never a manual, but I can say the BEST way to learn and maybe the ONLY way to learn is to have someone teach you.

I have rebuilt both automatic and t5. The t5 is easier to rebuild in my mind. It's pretty straight forward when you get into it.
I don't know where to find a manual on t5 rebuilds, but for automatic there are quite a few.
I used the Haynes Transmission Overhaul Book. They may make one for manual too.

a manual is easier to rebuild than a automatic, i seen in auto zone they have books on how to rebuild tranny's, an once you get the book go for it, it's not that hard.

check out the Motor books, they have books devoted solely to trans/drivetrain stuff. i rebuilt my t5 using that as a guide, it gives numbered illustrations and clear directions.

Right on man!
How are you going to learn if you don't try?
Read read and read.....
Sure someone could teach you, but you might be gifted enough to figure it out on your own too.
I know that automatic guys have to have a solid understanding of hydraulics, since that's essentially what an automatic is.
Most things that I've learned to do and continue to learn are those things that people have always told me...."you better leave that to a professional! "
Auto's are very sensitive to contaminates too, clean work area and a couple magnetic parts trays for sure.

the 700r4 is supposed to be the hardest tranny to rebulid i have a video on it and cracked my open and its really not that hard for a rebulid. but like junkyarddog said you have to keep it very clean. dont use rags on them. and make sure you really want to do it. and just keep all you old steels and clutchs in the same order they came out in and you should be succesful with it and good luck if you try it.

Buy another tranny to rebuild, the just swap them, so your not as screwed as if you cannot figure it out, your cars up on jackstands and your tranny is in pieces
