Open Rear End Conversion
Open Rear End Conversion
I own a 1982 Chevrolet Camaro SC that I am currently in the process of restoring. It still has the stock open rear end in it. I really want a limited slip or posi rear end but I dont want to go through all the hassle of finding a rear end and taking the old one out. I know you can purchase conversion kits to convert the stock open rear end to a limited slip. I was just wondering if anyone knew where I can go to get one of these conversion kits and where I could get one the cheapest.

It's not a "conversion kit", exactly; what you need is the entire carrier.
The cheapest one you could gert is the SLP "take-off" one that came out of stock Z28 rears when they upgraded them in the SS pacakge. They might still have some of those. They're $99. That, plus some bearings and fluid, would be all you'd need if your car was 90 up.
Unfortunately, since you have a 82 car, the axles that are in your rear won't fit in that carrier, so you'd have to buy axles too. You pretty much have to buy a whole 90-up rear to get them; or to buy them new, they're about $250.
A posi that will fit your 26-spline axles will run between $300 and $400. Plus, of course, bearings and fluids.
Don't bother with the one out of a S truck; they are garbage. People tear them up with the little weenie motors that come in those trucks.
