well it looks like getting new gears put in my rear end is going to cost a heafty lump of cash (at least $500)

would i be better off getting a junkyard rear end with 3.73's? did any 3.73's come with posi at all?

 

Yes. My 84 Trans AM is a 3.73 posi disc rear and many other 84 TA's are. Here's the RPO's:
GT4 : AXLE REAR, 3.73 RATIO
G80 : AXLE POSITRACTION, LIMITED SLIP
J65 : BRAKE SYSTEM, PWR, FRT & RR DISC

I would say that it depends on mileage and how much power you plan to put through it. If you found one with higher mileage you could get a rebuild kit for it and go that route, but you still have to pay for the rear itself, so it may end up costing the same.

You may have trouble tracking down this particular rear also, but you may be able to find another one that has had gears done already. Most junk yards charge too much in my opinion also. You just have to keep your eyes open for a deal I'd say.

 

well right now im lookin at $650+ for new gears or like about $300 for a whole rear used. or i could just try and install the gear myself
