Driveline play.. Don't get it.

I've been trying to figure this out for a while.

I got a heck of a lot of play in my drivetrain. I can't even race the car, cuz I think i'll break wherever the play is.

Say i'm in 5th gear goign like 70. I let off the gas.. bang.. I give it gas.. bang.. That much play.

I was thinkink maybe the ring and pinion, so I reshimmed the carrier.. The backlash is very minimal. I'd think you'd have to have a half inch of backlash to make that much.

Then I started thinking the zexel torsen take off locker, but then I thought "if this thing had tha much play, GM woudln't OEM it in 30,000 cars"..

So i'm wondering. Maybe T5?? Maybe the spring hub on my ram ceramic clutch ? (which lemme tell you after 2,000 miles shoudl NOT grab as high as it is).

Have you checked your tranny mount? Motor mounts? If one of these has let go it will give a heck of a bang every time you shift or let off and get on it again. Just a thought hopefully its something small that has been overlooked

U-joints, torque arm mount, loose torque arm bolts at the rear, LCA bushings; probably not the trans.

I shoulda been more specific, but I do appreciate the response. Here goes:

1) Torque arm is jegster bolts to the floor like a ladder bar. http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...07&prmenbr=361

2) LCA's are brand new spohn. New bushings. all greased.

3) Shocks are brand new.

4) Tranny mount is brand new, not poly, but not broke. Tranny doesnt even move.

5) Motor mounts seem fine.

6) All bolts on the torque arm, shocks, etc rechecked with impact gun. TIGHT!

7) Drievshaft/ujoints replaced.

I really went over this a lot.. I don't normally post unless I get real stuck. I'm real stuck.

i'd look the torque arm over and check pinion angle. you made no changes to the drive shaft or it's length?

I had a tranny mount go twice in one week about 15 years ago on an 84 Z... It looked fine and would not budge by hand but when I removed it there was a fracture that ran through the rubber enough for it to allow the trans to slam up but it was still too strong to move by hand. This took a whole lot of headaches for me to figure out back then but for the $25.00 or so for a poly mount I would sure start there and see how it goes. Poly trans mounts are a neccessity IMO. Besides its a real low cost easy swap piece of your puzzle. If it turns out that it is indeed not the mount then you are only out minimal cash and a half hour labour plus you will have a mount that you will never have to worry about again because sooner or later that rubber mushy is going to let go.
