Locker rears..

Gonna go look at a 2nd gen 4sale this weekend.. Owner told me that it has a 3.73 "solid lock" rear.. Said he has no idea exactly what that is... I assume it is like a detroit locker or something..

If I get the car, when the car is done,(it needs a motor) it will be a daily driver.. Has a 200-4R tranny in it also..

But any idea who makes a locker called a "Solid"type locker & what it is & if I can use it on the street??

He said it came with the car when he bought it, and has only driven the car like 5-10 miles on 2 occassions b/c it has been sitting while other work was being done to it..Now needs to get rid of car.

Thanks in advance
Joe

Was he talking about a full spool or a mini spool. When "most" people talk about lockers they are usually referring to a Detroit Locker which is fine for street use and track abuse.

If it was somebodies way to make a cheap posi by installinig a mini spool, byy all means take it out or bad things will come upon you in the future when daily driving as in snapped axles.

Even a full spool on a daily driver is not a wise choice, very poor cornering characteristics when it's locked solid, make the front of the car want to push when turning. Better than a mini spool, but not even a wise choice for a daily driver.

If he dont know, the only way you'll both know, is by pulling the diff cover and just pray to *** it's not a Lincoln Locker or a Miller Locker...2 of the worst lockers ever made!!

Nothing if you don't mind things breaking when you least want them to. I've got a video of it happening

You'll apreciate this Mike. Had our first points race today, and you know how bad things always go in 3's. Well I lost a cam in my motor 3 weeks ago so that's outta comission until I get this 383 put together, last weekend my buddy snapped the end of his intake valve off and ruined his 468, so we've been waiting for the 3rd thing to happen.

Well 2nd round in mod our friend with a 70 chevelle with a 468 snapped his drive shaft in to at the line and windowed his florr pan in a beautiful car, but he's not real closr realation to our group so he dont count...anyways when we were helping push him out he told my buddies-that lost the 468- brother to touch his driveshaft for luck since the brother is also running a 70 Chevelle with a good sized 468, Chad-the brother-said he did'nt want to get jinked by touching it.

2 cars later Chad was up in his 70 Chevelle, light turned green, and THUMP, CRACK, RATTLE RATTLE. He completely sherred off the bellhousing of his TH400 and had the pan come up through the floor board, which raised the seat up about 3" when it came through and damn near sucked the shifter through the bottom of the car

It's funny now since nobody got hurt, even though it could've been ALOT worse, but now FINALLY our trilogy has been completed!!

Oh, then I drew a duck first round only to have the truck settle once I hit the T-brake and drew an Autostart...now that sucked!!! I've been meaning to hook the line lock into the T-brake all winter/spring so this would never occur...well now I have justified my reasoning to finally getting it done.

Man, I hope I'm not jinxed now by reading about you and your buddies day of carnage/bad luck at the track. I've had pretty good luck myself (except for blowing off an upper radiator hose going about 135 mph around the 1000 ft. mark a couple years ago), at least up until maybe now! I plan on going to the track myself next weekend, and if anything happens...

Anyway, at least everyone survived unscathed, and the only pain is a temporary one in the right rear pocket area. Also, when your actual race car(s) breaks, you always have the tow vehicles and maybe a golf cart, pit bike, or something else left to race with.

Thanks for sharing that humurous/unfortunate experience.

Well, funny you should mention the pit bike...the coil pack in my lil 2 wheel hot rod went south on me last weekend, now I'm trying to hunt down a reasonably priced replacement. Found one on E-bay and it ended up going for almost as much as I paid for the whole dang motorcycle!!
