Have Centerforce clutch... need flywheel reccomendations

I already have a Centerforce clutch, disc, and throwout bearing... but my stock flywheel is toast.

I looked thru the Summit catalog, but I have no idea what I'm looking for.

The car is mostly all daily driver, some track time. I have some mods, but what should I get for a flywheel? Aluminum or steel?

Part #'s are good too, as I don't know if I need the 153 tooth or 168, etc.

88 car, mostly street, I'd say a steel one.

You need a 153-tooth one for 87-up with 1-piece rear main seal.

Look for the stock replacement configuration. It's not much of a mystery to get the right one.

Ok, I wasn't sure as to what tooth one to get.

Any brand preference? I was looking at Hayes, but what else is good?

Also, internal or external balanced?

Don't worry about it. That only confuses the issue. You'll get as many explanations as there are explainers, most of them wrong, maybe none of them right.

Remember the 3 magic words: stock replacement configuration.

86-up.

I agree; get a stock one. They work, and work well.

So no aftermarket brand, just a stock replacement?

Where would I get a stock replacement one? The dealer wants $400!

Also, I'm sure there are "Made in China" stock replacements for $100... and I don't want that.

Can I get a GM one for a reasonable price? If not, I guess I still need opinions!

I didn't say "stock replacement from GM only"; I said "stock replacement configuration".

There are at least a dozen mfrs of these things that you could go with, in addition to GM. Centerforce, Lakewood, McLeod, etc. would be places to look. Check anybody that makes clutches.

The Centerforce one (700170) is $255 at Summit. That should be about typical.

duh to me!

So that part # will work with my configuration best? If so, I'll order it!

I'm not too versed in brands, that's why I asked for the best reccomendation.

That one would do the trick for sure: I don't know about "best", but it's certainly "good", and it's the right one which is of course important. Some one of the others might be a little less or more $$$, but I doubt it would be by much, so if that price looks good to you, go for it!!

Makes sence too, as it's the same manufacturer that made my clutch lol

Unless anyone else says otherwise, I'll order it.

I don't need anything else do I? I have a new rear main seal, new clutch, throwout, etc. Anything else?

...? That's part of the tranny right? I'm hopefully having my new one rebuilt before it goes in. (Right now I have a toasted T5 in there, totally destroyed... back wheels don't turn; can't even get the shifter out of gear!)

It goes in the end of the crankshaft. It supports the front end of the clutch gear of the trans. Without it, or with a bad one, your trans won't last long.

Is that a parts store item?

Are there better ones; like an aftermarket one?

I think you can get them at parts stores, but I've never tried.

I know you can get them from GM or from Moroso or from alot of the clutch companies. All roughly the same price, somewhere around $15.

There's also a bronze bushing type, which is a parts store thing. It's about a buck.

Get pn 14061685 from your local GM dealer. This is the needle bearing version shown in the picture, not the bronze busing type. They shouldn't charge you more than $14.

um the part # for the clutch you gave me comes up with this:

4.3L 262ci V6, 153 Tooth, 30.1lbs, Steel, Counter Balanced

That will work with my engine?

Yup.

If you read further on through the description, you'll see it's also for 86-up 305s. Which is the same thing you need for a 86-up 350.

http://www.centerforce.com/centerfor...tarq=CHEVROLET very first one on the page

Why not an aluminum flywheel, I thought any reduction in rotational weight - i.e. driveshafts, wheels, etc. - was a good thing. I have heard people recomend a steel one for street use before, but I don't know why.

Mostly because there's so little mass, that there's a tendency to kill the motor when trying to take off easy (with very little gas pedal) because it doesn't store much energy. you have to kind of rev it up and feather the clutch alot more than with a steel one. Great for racing under some circumstances, hard to drive on the street with a small motor.

It's been turned, or ground so the surface is perfect, too many times, and can't be turned again... and it needs it! My clutch slips like it's worn, but it's brand new! I hope I didn't fudge up my clutch, but I only drove it for about 400 miles till my tranny went

hmmmm, interesting. Just out of curiousity, how many times have you had it turned? Is there a typical # of times that is usually ok and then no more? Like is twice getting to be too much and maybe some problems starting?

I've had a couple of 86-up f-body ~16lb flywheels turned twice or more with no problems. It's a thickness thing, not a # of times turned thing.

You can get that bearing just about anywhere. GM dealer, Car Quest, Zone, Napa, etc. FWIW.

Weird, I ordered it from Summit Monday, and it was out of stock. I already paid for it, so I might as well wait till 6/2.

Which one did you order? They have it available from about 4 or 5 mfrs. Why don't you just call them up and have them change it to one of the ones that [i[is[/i] in stock? You could have it at your door in the morning.

meh

I ordered the copper roller pin one or whatever, the one that was most reccommended by everyone I asked. It won't kill me to wait a few more days. Not like I have the $$$ to have the new tranny/flywheel/bearing installed yet anyway!

I see.... that's a bit different from sitting on "go", and missing just that one stooopid little piece to be able to make it happen.
