torque converter: lockup or non-lockup?

I've got a '89 GTA with tpi 350 and a rebuilt 700r4 (2 years before I bought the car). I don't think my torque converter is locking up, and I'd like to figure out if it's a non-lockup or lockup torque converter that's just not working (and why it's not working).

Can I pull the cover off the converter and look at it externally to see if it is lockup or non-lockup? For the purposes of testing, would it hurt a non-lockup converter to get the ecm to try to lock it (by putting a switch for it connected to the ALDL pins A and F I believe? found it here on TGO in tech articles) Also, if you know what connections that engage lockup I need to check, please let me know. Thanks for your help.
