Help me out. What should I do about my rearend?
Ok guys, here's the deal....
I recently completed swapping in a 406 small block with just about 600hp/600 lb tq. Along with this went in a pro-built TH-350. I currently have a the original GM 10-bolt rearend with a zexel-torsion posi and 3.73 gears.
I know the 10-Bolt won't last too long with the power she is pushing so now I am looking at options. The simpliest seem to be the most un-wallet friendly. I can't, at this point, afford to drop 2 grand on a Moser or Strange 12-Bolt or 9" rearend. This leads me on to my big question.
What would be the best rearend for my situation. I will be looking at putting in a spool along with 3.7x gears. Currently I'm thinking the best bet would be to find a Dana 44, but we all know the odds of finding one of those. That then gets me to the 9 Bolt. Will it be possible to make a 9 Bolt handle this kind of power with a set of slicks on without grenading? Otherwise that puts me to finding a 12 Bolt or 9" and adapting it to fit. I am not afraid to jump in with the fabrication and wouldn't have a problem but what cars should I look for a rearend off of?
If you guys could get me some ideas as to what you think would be the best that would be great. As of now, I need to break the engine in anyways, I can just toy around with the 10-Bolt.
Thanks,
Andrew

oh it will break, we welded my buddies and this saturday he snapped an axle on his first run at the track witih street tires, then almost tagged it off the guardrail then spunn around a couple times in the middle of the track, luckily the guy in the other lane was out of the way or he woulda smoked him, so if you really like your car, i wouldn't try and race it with a weak rear end in it, could cost you more to fix the body after than a good rear diff. the inners were fine and took it well, but axles are pretty small..

I know the 10-Bolt won't do it. I'm just using it as a crutch until I decide what to do.
Will a 9-Bolt handle the power and the stress that the engine/ slicks combo will throw at it?
Or would I be better off picking up a 12 Bolt or 9" and getting it narrowed and modified to fit?

I'm going to go with 3.73, a girdle, main studs, and an eaton posi. Welding the axle tubes is over rated from what I've read.
