Anyone have picture with trans pan off and filter in place?
Anyone have picture with trans pan off and filter in place?
I am just wanting to make sure my car has the proper filter on the transmission.
I have an 1986 IROC-Z 700R-4 and couple years back I was told that ther are 2 types of filters for these transmissions as the transmissions changed etc..
I don't know if this is true or not. But coupel days ago I changed my trans pan with another one with a sender mounted to it. But I noticed that with the transmission pan off I could see some kind of spring that may be used to hold the filter in place? My filter was too short to reach it so I am curious to what it should look like with the pan removed.

No there isnt a spring that holds your filter on. Your filter plugs into a hole in the tranny real snugly and thats it. when you change it, you twist it a little and pop it out, no springs, no bolts. Thats how it is on my 85 700R4 and my 92 700R4. BTW, the 2 differant filters they are referring to, I suppose it means the old style filter and new style filter. The aftermarket replacement filters come with a sheet detailing the differance between the stock filter and new filter, some kind of design change but in any case, they fit exactly the same and the new one goes back in just like the old one came out. Hope it helps.
Cool,
I understand that, I did notice that when you tap the filter in place it does wiggle around and is not that firmly held in, it is not rock solid it has movement once in place. I guess that is normal. It pretty much looks like the filter is also held up by the transmission pan as I saw scratch marks from the filter on the bottom of the pan.

It shouldn't be scraping on the bottom of the transmission pan.. One common thing that can happen in that the old o-ring for the transmission filter can mistakenly be left behind in the front pump. This makes the new filter unable to fully seat where its supposed to... Take a peak up in the hold where the filter tube goes and see if there's another metal/rubber seal ring stuck in there.. If there is, the [strangely] perfect tool to get it out is one of the smaller offset screwdrivers (the ones with a 90* bend on each side)..
