Re: 700r4 strength?
87 and up 700's were the better deals...just make sure it's not a bad trans...the 3-4 clutch pack tends to go out early.

Also grab the driveshaft, TV cable, shifter and linkage, dipstick and tube, rearend, brake lines, prop valve, and have fun. What's the rear ratio currently in your car? 700's are fairly troublesome though, so pull the pan before you pull the trans and see what's at the bottom of it - some grey and copper is probably OK, but who knows - if it has fluid, give it a wiff for a burnt smell. A trans go shift kit will make your day though, and a little bit more stall speed will do wonders.

Damm the cars a 85.I am just looking for a good core for my buddy to rebuild for me,we'll strip it right down and put new guts in it from B&M.They have those transpak's i think there called and come with all the goodies to rebuild. The diff i got today seems in good shape it a 3.27 ratio which sucks im looking for 3.73.I did grab everything with the diff, all the cables, driveshaft, proportioning valve and master cylinder.Tomorrow ill grab the trans and all the cables and the ws6 front sway bar.Musta been half a dozen guys stripping that poor car today, looked like a nascar pitstop at the local pickapart

Do you mean the 88 is an 85? I don't think 85's came with a 3.27 borg warner rear. It may be a 3.23 GM 10 bolt though.
