Transmission Swap
I HAVE A 91 RS WITH A 305 TBI. THE TRANNY IS GROWLING AND WONT SHIFT TO DRIVE. I ALSO HAVE A PARTS CAR 85 BERLINETTA WITH A 305 CARBURATED, WITH AN OVERDRIVE TRANNY. CAN I SWAP THE BERLINETTA TRANNY INTO THE 91 RS? THE 91 RS IS ALSO AUTO OD. i THINK THEY ARE BOTH 700R4'S. ARE THERE DIFFERENCES IN THEM FROM YEAR TO YEAR? ANY INFO WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. It should be a plug and play swap....... The only thing you need to concider is the rear end gearing.
The Berlinetta 305 only came with an Automatic and that set-up only came with 3.08 gears. Your 91 RS 305/Auto should have 2.73 gears from the factory. Using the Berlinetta tranny without correcting the speedo gears will throw the Speedo reading off.
Just be sure to pull the Speedo gears out of your tranny once it's removed and install them in the Berlinetta tranny before installing the replacement tranny. Swap the speedo gears while the trannys are out of the car to make things easy on yourself. ( getting the speedo "drive" gear off the tranny tailshaft while the tranny is installed can be a pain !! )
