Shimming the carrier and housing

I have recently shimmed the carrier assembly. I think I used to much shim though. I ended up using .047 on each side. I went to put the carrier assembly back into the differential housing and check the wear pattern. I could not insert it with both original shims. Did I use too much to shim the carrier or is this usual? The carrier seemed to seat well with the spider and side gears. I set it up for street use only really. I used all new bearings.

that's only .094, most carriers i've seen have more like .2 to .25 shim per side. whatever total shim thickness you had when you removed it is what you should have when you put it back. how the shims are arranged from side to side is the only variable.
