Had rear gears changed from 2.73 to 3.73 thick ring and pinion. Stock 10 bolt. I'm noticing a whining sounds coming from rear end and the best way to describe it is it sounds like a police or ambulance sirene in the back ground that varys with speed. Is this normal?? Haven't had a chance to call the guy cause its the weekend

Yep, you should have a little wine nothing to crazy though..
whose gears did you use??? most aftermarket gears are cut for strength and the OEMs use a "quiet" type cut..

Which gears did you use? Richmond whine. Ask me how I know.
If they are set up correctly there should be very little to no whine at all.

not sure the manufacturer of my gears they are a 3.73 thick ring and pinion. He told me they are set up very very good and that the whine is normal especialy when changing from a OEM gear to a performance gear. These are designed for strength not comfort.
Guy has a very good reputation. Here's his web site if anyone is interested. By the way these gears are only temporary for the Pro-built automatic I'm about to put in. I'll replace the rear when I break it or I can afford a Moser posi 12bolt. Whichever comes first. Performance Differential

As long as it doesn't get any louder it should be fine. But you should barely be able to hear it. If it's quite noticeable I would take it back and have it checked just to be sure. I once had this problem and it got progressively louder. I had to take it apart put a new crush sleeve in it and reset the pinion depth to fix it, this was on a Ford 9 inch.

it's real faint. At first I kept thinking a police car or ambulance was coming up on me. Thats exactly what it sounds like but real faint. I don't think theres anything wrong but of course I will always be aware!!
