89RS 700r4
Hi, I have an 89RS,305,700r4, that I bought used with just over 100k when I purchased it. When first starting for the day it seamed to slip a little when it shifted to second. Had the fluid and filter changed as well as a slight band adjustment.. Seemed fine after this. At about 150k had to replace rear seal and bushing. Car had developed a small leak. Did the fluid and filter change again. Seemed ok after this, leaked stopped ran ok . Now at 285K it has had another couple of fluid, filter changes and has now started not wanting to shift into gear when first cranked. Cold mornings are the worst. After warming does fine. Reverse is worse. After warming car preforms fine. Still get about 24mpg on the road and runs 75mph at 2200rpms. Mechanic who serviced transmission said the seals are old and weak and do better when warm, Said a rebuilding would fix this. $950 for the rebuild(is this fair). Have been told that the 700r's do not last long after rebuilding. Should I rebuild or look to get new tranny? Really like this car. Bought the Z to drive while repairing this one.

For that price, it better be a hell of a rebuild. Ive never personally had a tranny rebuilt for me, but i know you can buy the probuilt kit for around 550 bucks + shipping. That is about the best kit for the money ive heard of so far. Im not sure how much some of the aftermarket 700's cost but im sure somebody else will post up with some more usefull info than what i have just given you.
you can try looking on www.probuilt.net, i think they sell whole transmissions, possibly something for your budget

The $950 price is to remove repair and reinstall. Is this a fair price? Other than a couple of alts a starter and normal replacement of shocks and struts , brake work nothing has been done to this car. The guy doing the rebuild does a lot of work for companys in town that have fleet vechiles. My main question is is it worth rebuilding or should I look for repacement?
