Doug nash trans
hey, I just found a doug nash 5 spd trans for the price of a 6 spd here.
Ive heard that it has a 1000hp rating ?
How is it?, does it make a whine, is it smooth shifting?
It it for fords and gm ?
for the price I really feel like getting it, tho im pretty uninformed about it.
After doing a search, I found some ppl that said they broke one which I find surprising ..
Thanks for any info

A Doug Nash 5-speed is a very stout trans. I would open it up and go through it if it's been sitting though. They have a problem where the bearings rust from condensation if they sit for long periods, particularly if they're empty. That'll kill a trans quick. 1000 HP? I don't know about all that. It's definately tough though.
Adapting it to your 3rd gen will be tough though. There's no TA mount, and a crossmemebr might need to be fabbed. If the 6-speed your talking about is a T56 it offers bolt in simplicity. You might save on the trans, but end up spendign more making it work in your car. The wrong part at the right price is still the wrong part.

There was a Nash 5 speed in my car when I first got it, it didn't have the angled bellhousing so the frame rail had to be "modified" to clear the clutch cylinder. I don't know how hard it would be to get the right bellhousing, if there's one available.

well, the guy wants 1500$ for it, thats the price of a T-56, tho I cant find that ..
A cross member could be fabbed, tho where's the ta gonna mount
Its the only available "good" trans for now.
Im still looking for a T-56 but my best bet is to buy a totalled LT1 3rdgen, and I dont have the money for that right now.
thx for the opinions

Check the internet for salvage yards and just start making calls. That's how I found my T56. It took a couple days, but I paid $1,200 delivered, with a warranty.

Does the warranty include brutal abuse ? ( it better )

If you can bu 6-speeds there for much less than $1,200 start buying them up and selling them on eBay. You'll make a killing.

There's 2 different Nash 5 speeds, one has straight cut gears for the strip, the other has angle cut for the street. The parts are relatively inexpensive (warner T-10) and are now available from Richmond gear. They also made a 6speed trans. The Nash works on a little different theory, instead of having an overdriven 5th gear it is direct. This helps in that being directly driven, there is less power loss through the trans , in 5th gear.(since the power output is in a straight line, roughly 1% compared to 6%) So, as an extreme example, in a standard (let's say t5) trans, you would have a 3.73 rearend gear and 5th would be overdriven. In a Nash, you would have a 3.50 rearend gear, but the nash would have a lower 1st gear, and 5th would be direct so the engine would run the same rpm at 70mph. (I can't say those numbers given as an example will come out to that, so work with me here, OK?). There were also some options in the gearing so that they could be tailored to your car (at least the race version). These trannies worked so well that they were outlawed in pro-stock back in the 80's. The Nash was originally designed for the mid 60's mark -4 Ford gt cars that kicked Ferrari's butt at LeMans, and everywhere else they ran. These cars had 500 plus horsepower, topped out at about 200mph and raced for 24hours. The Nash is the tranny from hell. IMO it's one of the best ones ever built. $1500 is a steal if it's complete and if you want, you can put a blown big block in front of it. The bell housing will is a standard chevy, or Lakewood type scattershield, you will have to fab up a mount for the slave cylinder though, or use an internal throwout bearing. http://www.racingclutches.com/content/product.asp

The owner replied ..
Its the one that has straight cut gears for the strip.
It has no syncromech .. just straight cut gears.
He sais its very noisy
I wont be able to shift it like a normal trans under street driving
Its nicely shifted pedal to the floor leaning against the
belhousing ? , and by doing half clutch drops
He also sais it powershifts nicely.
Its almost as big as a richmond 6 spd
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It sounds like fun lol, but I think its too much for me ...
Small price to pay for a bullet proof trans.. but if its hell to drive ...dont know.. ill call him to chat, if he brings down the price .. hmm .. :lala:

If it's got straight cut gears it's also got the dog ring synchros. These are great for full throttle power upshifts. Downshifting is not as fun. You'll have to get really, really good at heel/toe downshifting to get it to go into lower gears. The gear whine from the straight cut gears will be very loud too. Listen to those raley cars and baja trucks sometime. That whine when they first start off isn't the turbo (it hasn't spooled up enouhg yet to make noise), that's the trans! Sounds like the wrong part at the right price.

May want to let that one pass and find a tremec or a t56. I think you'll be better off int he long run. This was a race tranny so it wasn't driven by a little old lady on sundays. It's noisy, dog clutches are a little bulky for the street. I'd pass. The Nash is the same as a Richmond btw.

So if anyone finds a deal on a 5 speed (which you can - I bought the trans, new Lakewood bellhousing, new Long shifter, & new Hays flywheel for $800) its a good transmission choice.
