700R4 to T-10
I'm thinking about doing a swap from my 700R4 to a 4speed manual. I was just wondering what would be needed to do this swap. Will I need a new driveshaft, mounts, etc? My tranny is bolted up to a Pontiac 400, so do I need a special bellhousing or adapter or will it bolt up fine? also I've heard of people converting the transmission to a hydraulic setup rather than manual. Is there any benefit to this? Are mechanical linkage transmissions difficult to adjust and is the linkage reliable?? What are the different types of T-10's? I looked in my shop manual and it shows 2 different types of 4speed manuals...76mm and 86mm. What are the differences?

You will need a BOP bellhousing to bolt it up to a Poncho block. You'll also need a crossmember from an '82 Camaro or Firebird, since they came with the 4-speed manuals (T10 and Sag.)
The mechanical clutch linbkage works just fine. I actually prefer it over hydraulic because you can 'feel' when the clutch engages better. The problem most people have with mechanical linkages is that its usually noticeably stiffer than a hydraulic setup.

cool, thanks for the info. What about the drive shaft, will it have to be shortened or lengthened? Would it be better to just find a car with all the stuff in it and swap it into mine? It could be a problem trying to find an early 3rd gen and a 4 speed at that, at least around my area. I might just have to piece all the components together.

An '82 parts car would be the best way to go, but if not, look in the classifieds here on the board.
The driveshaft will have to be longer than what you have now. Again, an '82 driveshaft will work. Thats what I used. All these parts can come from any '82, V8/V6/I4... auto or 4-speed. As far as the parts you need, they are all the same. Just has to be '82.
Also, check some of the board sponsors (top of the page) because many of them have custom parts designed for exactly this kind of thing.

I have the same question because
I have been advised not to do the t5 swap
because I have a 350sbc withalot of torque.
why in the manuals do they use
millimeter numbers for trannys like you said
73mm etc.. whats up with that?
I will go to the junkyards to search for 82 camaro.
thanks
