700R4 advice

Well, my tranny doesnt have too much life left in it i dont think, and if i'm gonna be putting a new engine in soon anyway, might as well do it all at once....only one slight problem....i'm 17 and dont have a job that pays what i want (though its not THAT bad....), so i cant go out and buy the best stuff out there.....
I've got 1600 right now to work with (both engine AND tranny), i'm hoping to spend around 750 for an engine, leaving me with around 850 for a transmission.......and torque converter hopefully

I need the overdrive, so a TH350 or TH400 isnt an option.....
I've got mixed feelings about buying one off eBay...on the one hand they look good, and there are a few sellers that have sold a lot of trannys and have good feedback, but on the other hand its ebay and well, you know.....its ebay :-)
What can you all recomend? Thanks
-Chris

BTW my current goal is a little over 300HP with some nitrous later on, not gonna be racing it EVERY week, but whenever i can get up to the track.....i doubt i'll be using slicks really, drag radials probably, so i dont know how strong it has to be.....

Thanks

Chris, don't take this the wrong way but, you are asking alot in exchange for your smaller budget. How handy are you? Do you have a relative or friend that can work with you with the technical stuff? A decent 700r4 that is put together well and with quality parts will likely run over $1000 alone. If you have good help and a service manual you can rebuild your trans yourself with some good parts for $500 or so. When I was 17 this would have been out of the question for me. I had no knowledge and no competant help. Regardless of what you choose, please do not choose a 500 dollar trans from ebay. Let us know what you can do yourself and I am sure you will get some good advise.

Well......time is a bit of a concern here as this is my only car, so it really would be best if i didnt have to wait a long time to get the car up and running again, so rebuilding it (especially myself) is out of the question for this time.....
hmm......

There is no shame in not being able to overhaul an automatic overdrive trans. This is a complicated job. Confidence is good but knowing your ability is always wise. Keep your eves peeled. Maybe you will run across a real good used unit with a good history of maintenance and care.

I've totally got my eye on a 700r4 on eBay. I've never had any problems with other high dollar purchases there. Seriously.

Do a search om 700R4 and "Mad Dog". The guys seems to stand behind his product. So what if he's in Florida.

Nice avatar.

My orig tranny fragged with 200,024 miles on it. I just searched through the local junk yards and found a fresh rebuild for $83.00.

Dropped it out of the T/A in the junkyard, put it in mine, did a few adjustments and it runs fine. Save yourself 700 bones.

Jim.

Take a look around in junkyards first, just in case there's a good deal that may come up. Otherwise, a rebuild kit sounds like a smart choice, maybe having a shop rebuild it if you don't mind paying labor. No matter how you look at it, fixing it, or purchasing a new one will take some time, but look around and review your options diligently.

good luck with everything

Yup. Junkyards, wreckers, you should be able to find a pretty good tranny for cheap.

As for the engine, well, same deal. Look around for one that doesnt have a lot of wear, and then do some work on it, and you'll probably be set.

Dude, I'm in the exact same boat as you right now. (almost. I am eighteen.) What I'm going to do is get the local technical institute to rebuild me an engine and tranny. I'm not sure, but I hear you only have to pay for parts. Labor is free.

I might try the junkyards, though how can you verify mileage and stuff?

That's the risk you take but one worth considering.

We need to arm wrestle for the avatar.

Chris, you are right about mad dog trans. They do seem to have a decent reputation with e-bay. The thing that would concern me is if I had a problem, small or large, it will cost hundreds of dollars to ship back and return to you. I would rather see you score some type of rebuild in a similar price range locally. It is easier to get satisfaction face to face in the event of a problem. I have rebuilt a couple of 700 r4's. I can tell you that they take alot of time to do right. To be as cheap as mad dog, the guy who rebuilds it cannot(imho) be spending much time at all on them. If you have a local dragstrip, ask the guys racing who , locally, buids there transmissions. Hopefully you have someone right in your neighborhood.

Oops, I just noticed that Chris didnt mention Mad dog. You are right though, You guys need to arm wrestle out the avitar rights!
