Diff???s 2.73 to 3.42
I have a 92 rs with a 305/auto. It has a 2.73 rear axel ratio. I found an 86 firebird with a 2.8l/auto.
As I understand the v-6/autos came with 3.42 rear axel ratios.
I was hoping to swap the entire axel set up, but I'm wondering if that is a good idea.
Any input regarding the strength of the two axels would be appreciated.

There's no significant difference in strength. The only difference is 26-spline stuff (slightly weaker) in the 86, vs your 92 28-spline stuff.
A 305 TBI car isn't going to stress axles to where that really matters.
I'd pull the cover and check what's actually in the rear, and to see what condiotion it's in, before laying out any money for it or turning any bolts.
