Transmission: What's a transmission???
Transmission Brains

What are the inputs (electronic/electrical/mechanical) that a TH700R4 needs from outside the transmission itself in order to function properly?

My '82 Firebird will receive a SBC transplant to replace the 2.8L V6. I would like to use a 700R4 behind it to minimize drama during the conversion.

The engine itself will be fully analog with only the ignition being electronic (MSD.)

Please tell me I don't need no steenkin' computer to make the tranny work.

Thanks,

Mike in Manila

The only transmission controls are the selector cable, TV cable, and TCC wiring.

Yeah, it's pretty simple. Ideally you need a relay and some wiring. There are instructions in the tech section that will tell you what you need and how to wire it up.

Thanks to all who have replied so far.

I did a whole bunch of research years ago when I owned an '86 Trans Am. I recall there was a certain year before which the TH700R4 had a problem with its internal hydraulics in a high performance application.

Is there an 'ideal' stock 700R4? I fully understand the risk involved in buying a used tranny. I would like to minimize this risk by limiting my choices to the more durable versions of this tranny.

Any quick suggestions for kits to improve the unit will be appreciated. Suggestions for ready-built aftermarket units will also be appreciated (just in case I win the lotto.)

TIA,

Mike in Cebu

Pre'86 units without the aux. VB are often criticized for being less durable than later models. Your best bet is to get the latest version you can, 700R4s just got better with time. A '93 trans would be great, just make sure it isn't a 4L60E.

Pro-Built's kits are the best by far. You'll get a durable, sweet shifting trans. The cost is up there, but the kit provides far more than any of the others I've seen (inlcudes a TransGo shift reprogramming kit and new 10-vane pump guts among other things). Everything is hand selected to work together based on Dana's years of experience. He had input into designing a lot of the parts in the kit.

Thanks to TKO.

Does ProBuilt have a website?
