Car: '86 Camaro, '02 WRX, '87 K5, '67
Engine: 350 TPI, 2.0turbo, 383 in the works, 289-4BBL, 232, A-head 4-cylinder
Transmission: T56, 5-speed, 700R4, C4, T176, semi-auto 2-speed
Axle/Gears: 3.73, 3.90, 4.88, 3.55, 3.54, 7.00
Why do you think the factory trans won't handle it? I ran a 360HP/425 lbs/ft. 350 in front of my stock 700R4 in my Blazer and flogged the hell out of it for two years. That's 4wheeling, flying down the interstate, and embarassing people at stoplights. It held up just fine, and only died because the rear blew and locked up. I broke the internal reaction planetary and low/reverse sprag trying to drag the truck with the front axel while the rear driveshaft was removed. That trans had a B&M shift kit and a 2,200 stall lockup converter that I installed just prior to swappign out the wee-o-five for the 350.

I would go with the TransGo reprogramming kit (not happy with the B&M kit, and the new trans I built uses the TransGo, which I love), Vette servo assembly, and a decent converter and it shold be fine as long as it doesn't have any problems now. You will probably want to get a governor recalibration kit too so you can raise the shift points. I'm thinking you're making peak power around 6,500-7,000 with a 350-400 horse 327. The kit will allow you to set the shift points for maximum performance.

B&M makes the governor recalibration kit. You should be able to buy it through Summit or the like.

The upgraded sunshell aka "The Beast" requires you to take a lot of the trans apart. It will improve strength, but if you are going to go that far I'd just rebuild the trans with a Pro-Built kit (which already has the TransGo kit in it). Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it. The sprag is a one-way roller clutch used in the low/reverse assembly. It allows the trans to freewheel in one direction, but locks up in the other direction to apply power. This is one of the neat tricks they use in an automatic trans to get 4 forward gears with only 2 sets of planetary gears.

I think with the TransGo kit, the Vette servos, and a good converter with the lockup functioning it should last you a year or two easily. Keep in mind that with a high winding 327 you aren't making massive low end torque, which is what will really kill a 700R4. I fried one with a near stock 350TPI motor in my '86, but that motor is probably close to 380 lbs/ft at near idle speed. That was also an old version 700R4, which was probably part of the problem. If you said you had a 400HP 383 I'd say rebuild the trans because you are probably talking about 450 lbs/ft or more at low RPM. The 327 should take it easier on the 700R4 and allow it to live longer than a bigger motor would. A lot of knowing if something will last is the application and surrounding parts.
