Better to build my rear, or do a swap?

Better to build my rear, or do a swap?

Hard facts...86 sc with a 305 and t5 setup....eventually that will go...but for my rear I have the stock 10-bolt (been told its a 26 spline), with stock gears. It's also a peg-leg. So would it be better for my time to swap out a used rear (10 bolt, 9bolt?)....or should I swap in a posi carrier and do some gear work? What Im really looking for is a higher gear ratio and posi....the only thing that is steering me away from swapping rears is that I have no clue to anything brakes....and Im not sure what else would be hard/involved in doing this swap. Anyone care to enlighten me on a decision (btw, my rear has recently started whining...I think she's goin)

For me it was cheaper to go with an LS1 rear. I ended up with the quiet GM set-up with 3.42's and base posi. I also was able to get rid of my drums in favor of the big disks in one fail swoop. I don't trust myself setting up a rear end yet and the cost was higher to re-build my stocker than to get a complete new one. It worked out because I need two new wheels anyways so I just need to order ones with 4th gen specs and slap them on the rear. In additon if I choose to upgrade the rear brakes I won't spend nearly as much as if I still had the drums. I see you have fancy wheels so you may want to rebuild your stocker or be patient enough to come across a 3.42 disk 3rd gen rear. If you have a place that won't charge an arm and a leg for a gear and posi swap that would be a good route to go. Every place in Ohio wanted no less than $400 for parts and labor and that was with me providing the gears and posi.

yea, I knew the 4th gen rear would be a good alternative, unfortunatly, I have my 10" wheels tucked just perfect, and I know the 4th gen rear would push them out a little bit more......if I were to wait for a thirdgen (disc or drum...I want to do a c5 or baer swap eventually)...would it be better to get a 9 bolt or 10?

I just went the up grade way and spent about 1300 . I was nevouse about doing it my self but also refused to have some other halfwhit do it for me , then charge me on top of it . If you only change over to a stock posi carrier with the correct spline count you can use your gears . Bolt it right in just keep your shim's on the correct sides . My expirence swaping over the inturnels was very 4-filling but I spent a month and a 1/2 reading about it and learing everything I could . It all depends on how much power you want to make as to with rear to run . If I wer to swap out the rear I would not stop at the 9-bolt though go for the 12-bolt . If you beef up the 10-bolt you can run a lot more power then your 305 is makeing now .

Borg Warner 9 bolt. Most (if all?) have disc brakes in the back, last for a while, most have 3.27 gears, and would allow you to tuck those rims nicely.
