new gear set question

I have a question about replacing my gears. First off i have a stock 7.5" 10 bolt open rearend, i heard a clunking noise and i was on my way to a friends to check it out. I was about 10 miles away when suddenly the rearend locked, after getting it hauled on a flatbed to the shop we discoverd that the pinion gear had snapped in half and lodged in the ring gear. I need a whole new gearset and i don't know for sure if i have a 2 or 3 series carrier, how do i find that out.(i think its a 2) Second, i cant really afford posi right now so can i just get bigger gears and still notice something performance wise? I was thinking 3.42 gears might be a good application, but i am no expert on this so i am not sure...Thanks for the help.

It has a stock 2.73 gear ratio, does that mean it is a 2-series?

Yes. You have a 2 series. Save your money and buy a take out 3 series. FYI, I have some 3.42's listed in the classifieds cheap.
