2.73 upgrading?
i have a 1992 z28 305 auto 700r4 with the 2.73 rear end posi stock unit and i was wondering if its possible and what all do i need to upgrade the rear end to a bigger size 3.08 3.23 3.42 etc and what other things i need to complete the job and will the stock posi fit on bigger size?? hellllp =) and i would like have the power disc brakes in back too so maybe someone has a 3.42 posi rear end with power disc for sale??
I automatically assumed 10 bolt because it's 2.73, that's a 10 bolt ratio. Anywho, you have an auto transmission, so you don't wanna go TOO high because of gas prices i'm assuming. But 3.42's will be a nice upgrade and still should give you fairly good mileage. You have a 2 series posi right now. You will need...
1) a gear made for a 2 series posi (which is 3.08 and lower ratios)
2) If not a gear made for 2 series, then a 3 series, but that will require a spacer, so buy that with the 3 series gear if you go that route.
3) Place to install it.
That's about it.
and also...PLEASE USE THE SEARCH BUTTON NEXT TIME! (who knows, you'll probably even find my post about all this when i was learning)
EDIT: Just looked at the huge picture in your signature, is that your car? If so, why does it only have one tire mark if it's posi? eh?

Your best course of action would be to upgrade the differential at the same time. The stock ones aren't exactly know for their durability. I'd suggest an Eaton. Get the set of gears you want 3.42 is a good automatic ratio. A stick could get by with 3.73s because it has a lower first gear and a taller OD ratio.
I'd recommend rebuilding the rear with new bearings, etc. Especially since your name implies that you want to run quick with this thing. The rear in your car is now 13 years old. Time takes it's toll, as does abuse. I'd at least check everything out, particularly the axels. It's probably due for axel bearings and seals, and maybe axelshafts if they are galled up.
A TA girdle is a good investement too, as a 10-bolt needs all the help it can get.
This way you start fresh with a unit you know you cna depend on. You'll be happier and safer in the long run.
