Strange transmission problem.....

Drove it about 12 miles today and everything was fine. On my way home it didn't want to shift out of first unless I tapped the gas, then I totally lost 2nd! 3rd and 4th felt like they were slipping. I made it home and shut it down after checking the trans fluid. Started it back up and went for a drive and everything is working fine. Drove all over the place and it still doesn't do it anymore. What should I do?

It's a 700r4 and according to the way the Hayne's manual says to check the fluid, it's full. The fluid has a slight brownish tint to it, but it doesn't look too bad.

I searched, but didn't find a trans problem quite like this one.

Drop the pan and look at the fluid that way. If there's any sludge or anything besides liquid for that matter, then you're bands gave out. It really sounds like your bands are slipping and might give away.

It's working fine now, but I guess I should change the fluid and filter. Would a clogged filter or burnt trans fluid cause this problem?

Dude. your trans is on a one way trip to crapsville.. Mine did the exact same thing.. and man when i tore it apart it was a total mess in there..clutches were messed up. bands were fubar'd.. be looking for another tranny so you are not caught out with your thing in the wind when the one in it now blows on you.

I was afraid of that. I'll start looking for one.
