2.77's Vs 3.42's

2.77's Vs 3.42's
My car came stock with 2.77's. With the 2.77's I ran 13.9@97. After I droped in the 3.42's I got a 13.5@99. Only good for 4 tenths of a second? I was planning on better times not sure what happened.........

Only 4 tenths of a second? So you're beating your old car by what, 4-5 car lengths?
Seems near about the usual improvement for that gear change.

Yes the 2.77's were posi. I thought that it would make a bigger difference. Maybe beacuse the new 3.42's spin more. hmm I thought it was a below average gain but I guess not from what people are saying.

.4 is HUGE. That's like about as much gain as you'd get from about 40 more ft-lbs & HP, or losing about 10% of your car's weight, in the ET range you're in.

I talked to this guy at a performance shop who said it should shave almost a full second off your 1/4. I would expect he knows what hes talking about? I guess it was either

4 tenths thats really pretty damn good. just move on to you're next mods. the guy at the preformance shop to say the least must have been smoking the good stuff.
He may not have been aware of the TPI motors characteristics. A lot of high performance motors make most of their power from 4000 rpm to 6500 rpm. That even includes the LS1s. The old school motors like the one I have now like to get to the 4000 rpm range and stay above that all the way down the track. May be even higher than that. So if you take a carbed car with a big cam and go from 2.77 to 3.43 you probably will see a second difference.
But think about it, you gained 2 mph from a freaking gear change. Find a horsepower calculator that goes by trap speed and see how much of a difference that is. Probably 20 hp and you didn't even directly add horsepower.

There could have been other factors such as weather I think it was a little cooler out than the last time I went. That can make a difference....Not sure how I gained the 2mph

What was your 60 ft times for each rear end? Maybe you got a slightly better 60 with 2.77 gears, but because of the extra spinning of the 3.42s, you got a slightly slower 60ft.
