700R4 shift linkage ?

I just dropped in a new motor and rebuilt my 700R4 transmission. My problem is with the shifter linkage. I replaced to old one because the outer covering broke. The problem is that I cannot get the shifter to move back into park after shifting out of park. As far as I can tell all the mounting brackets are correctly located and the new cable is the correct cable. I can just barely attach the cable when both the shift lever on the transmission and in the car are in the same gear (cable doesn’t seem long enough). I am pretty sure this is why it won’t shift back into park. I really need to move the cable attachment forward in the transmission lever slot, how can I do this. I’m almost to the point of modifying the cable bracket on the transmission (w/ Mr. Hammer), but I am hoping there is a proper way to fix this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Any suggestions? No park, no driving.

i have noticed that aftermarket shift cables don't fit the bracket very well. if it does happen to go in all the way, loosen the nut that holds the cable to the linkage. have a friend pull the shifter like they are going to put it in reverse(but don't).push forward on the linkage as you tighten the nut. this is how i had to do it when i bought a replacement from autozone. now of course, i have a b&m megashifter, but that is another story.
