will 4.3 v6 5 speed work on 355 SBC? how long?

ok i looked, got very dizzy and confused, gave up and decided to post my question. i am looking to put a manual trans in my Z28, i found a nice deal on a 5 speed from a 91 s10 with a 4.3 vortec v6. will it work? and how long will it work against my engine as in my sig below? i plan on rebuilding it before it goes in, and may add stronger gears and such, but what may i run into if it does indeed fit?

thanks in advance guys and gals!!

Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
No. At least, not as a direct interchange, or anywhere close to it.

It has no provision for the torque arm, and its case isn't "rotated".

i plan on mounting the torue arm to the body any way, to add strength there, but what do you mean by the case isnt "rotated" just a little unclear on that

What he means is the 3rd gens 5 speed in tilted at something like a 14 degree angle, probably for clearence issues, I don't know, so the other trans will not sit in there right. If it even works at all.

It's the bellhousing that has the rotated pattern, not the trans itself.
Don't the truck 5-speeds have the shifter location at the front of the tailshaft instead of the back like the F-bodies?

Physcially yes, the 4.3 t-5 will bolt up to a SBC. As far as installing it in a third gen; i dont know how it will work due to the third gen rotated bellhousing. The bellhousing was rotated with the shifter 15* towards the driver. Hope that can help you. -Bob

The transmission IS rotated, in the sense that a F-body trans will not fit any other car, or vice-versa, without changing something else.

The case, which is the casting piece that starts at the bell housing and is about 10-12" long, is NOT rotated; that piece is the same as any other GM T-5. However, both the shifter mount pad, and the trans mount boss, ARE rotated, to go along with the bell housing change.

Yes the S trucks (AFAIK that includes the Astro van) locate the shifter at the very front of their extension housing, which is about 6" in front of where it needs to be in a F-body. If you tried to cram that setup into a F-body, where that would make the handle stick out of the floor, it would have to go RIGHT THROUGH THE MIDDLE of the radio.

Everybody is always trying to find a way to cheap around getting the right T-5. Now you gotta remember I'm sofakingdom that I just can't understand much of anything; but with T-5s for these cars as easy as they are to get hold of (just look at the classifieds on this site), and as cheap as they are, I fail to comprehend why anybody would feel compelled to jam some completely wrong inferior thing into their car that they're otherwise trying to improve.

Putting either of the "V" (Vette, Vortec) buzzwords in front of the description of a part is a waste of bandwidth, unless it's heads with casting #s of 906 or 062, or the intake to fit them. That 91 6-cyl is still just a 6-cyl.

You can buy the right transmission for a small fraction of what those "upgraded" gears (which won't do a TBI car any good anyway) will cost you. Re-connect with Earth, head out of the clouds; and just get the right transmission. You'll save yourself alot of time, money, and trouble.
