My experience with maddog transmissions

i finally got my car back from the local shop. it turned out that the car wouldn't shift into2,3,4 because there was a peace of metal stuck in the valve body. most likely the trans was shipped to me like that. Maddog crossthreaded some bolts in the pan. although he has agreed to pay for the repair bill, "$200" i haven't contacted him back to let him know what they had to do to fix it. it seams to be shifting good, but i've only driven it from the shop to my house so i really havent put it to the full test yet.

A warning to my fellow 700r4 owners stay away from maddog, he's a good salesman, and will work with you, but his work doesn't seam to be nearly as good as he claims. i think i'm still having some sort of prob with it. in fourth gear if you give it 1/4 throotl it seems to be slipping or trying to kick back into third. if i'm doing 70 mph and the rpms are at 2k and i give it 1/2 throttle or so the rpms go upto 3k and if you give it 3/4 throotle they go up to 3,300 or so. the cars pulling the whole time, but it seems to me like it's slipping, could it be torque convert slip. the converter is a new 2k precission lockup stall. and if you let off the gass while it's slipping the torqu convert locks and the rpms go back to 2k. any ideas on this one?

if youre in the market for a 700r4 look elsewhere maddogs gangster trans doesn't seem to be that great of a trans, and i don't think they put much time into theese units at all. his add says theyre dynotested. but when i got the trans it looked like it was bone dry inside, never seen a drop of ATF. The warranty on his website says that a 1 year warranty is standard. but on the packing slip he sent me said 3 months. i called him on it and was like WTF. i did get him to honor the 1 year warranty, but unless you raise hell about it you'l probaly never see it. so take my advice look else where before going to maddog. he's all hype.

does anyone know what i'm talking about when i say the trans seems to be slipping in fourth, all other gears all great. please get back to me if anyone has anyideas. thanks again. Scott

I typically spend 20-25 hrs rebuilding and upgrading a 700r4/4l60 trans. I believe overhaul time (by the book) is 18 hrs. The minimum spent on parts is $150. Usually closer to $200.
Most of the e-bay guys sell transmissions for approx $500. You cannot rebuild them properly and put in quality parts, and still make a decent profit for that small amount of money. The only way to sell them that cheap is to build them extremely quick, and use cheap parts. I have no dealings with Mad Dog and would never bash him.
Problems similar to yours are quite common with budget transmissions. My local trans guy assembles them with a small impact gun. I almost puked when I saw this. Hopefully all works out well for you.

Another thing to be aware, servo pin length is critical to these units. Most shops do not check this. It requires a $400 tool to do so. If for any reason the trans has to come out of the car, have a shop check this.

Sorry to bust into this thread but "Floor Guy" I have a question. I have rebuilt my 700 and just yesterday I think it finally took a dump. I have about 700 miles on the rebuilt motor and ever since if you take off from a dead stop and give about 1/8-1/4 throttle it drives and shifts fine. Any throttle given between 1/4-3/4 it sounds like the band is not fully clamping the sun shell. But if you smack her in the rear from a dead stop the tires spin and it shifts normal and good. But today after I woke up and went into the garage it smelt like the fluid was cooked. I didn't have time to mess with and will inspect her tomorrow. I'm going to start with draining the fluid and going from there. If all looks good I will have to remove it and open it back up. Also I'm running a rebuilt 2800 H/D stall convertor.

Any input would be great as to what might be the problem. I really don't want to remove the tans and can hopefully take care of the problem simply by removing the pan and the valve body.
