Apparantly you can use either ATF or Gear oil assuming non world class. When I researched it a while back, I found out that GM couldn't make up their mind and switched between the two throughout the years. If you have a World Class tranny use only ATF though.
I have a non world class and ended up using ATF with a quart of Lucas to thinken it up a bit. That would be my recommendation.
