Transmission Delimna

Ok guys, here is the delimna. I just gave my daughter my 89 RS, that is fully loaded, now I am going to build me another 68 Camaro. The problem I have is the choosing of the transmission. I am gonna use a 3rd generation transmission and rearend. I have been reading alot of articles on the 200-4R, and the 700-R4 transmissions. Both are good for up to 600 horse power, and 715 ft.lbs of torque, with the right converter. The 200 is supposed to be the exact size and length as the 350 turbo, but the 700 is about 2 inches longer. This means a new drive shaft, which isnt a big concern, cosidering the rearend is going to be cut down, and tubbed out. I am pulling about 600 hp from the small block 400. The reason for the swap is for local driving, those high RPMs tend to take the gas hand down a little quicker, and with the OD gear it will help. Tell me which you guys think is the better.

Why in the world would you use a 7.50" 3rd gen rear? They are the weakest rear GM made next to the 6.50" Chevette rear. A 10 bolt 8.50" from a 1st or 2nd Gen would be a step up or better yet a 12 bolt. The 700R4 built with right components will hold up to that hp, as will a 200R4.

I am just using the housing for the rearend, the gears and axles will be changed. I like the set up for the break system, easier to change out to disk at a later time if neccessary. Also using a 3rd generation break set up for the front disk, so when I buy breaks they are for the same years.

Well, case is the weak point. The side bearing caps break & the case will spread when the pinion tries to ride up the ring gear on hard launches.

OH well then, guess I will go back to the narrowed rear pre fabbed then. Thanks, but still thinking of the 2004R, but what is the diff, in the 2004R and the 2000R4? Havn't seen much publication on the 2000R4.
