What's the difference between these two 700R4 VSSs?

Engine: LO3, 383 Stroker
Transmission: 700R4, TH400
Axle/Gears: 4th gen 3.23 posi/LS1 discs, stock
What's the difference between these two 700R4 VSSs?
Whats the deal with these? Why is one "black" and the other one "white"

I believe that one is for smaller speedo gears, and the other for larger - one of the tranny sites sells a different housing for larger (more teeth) speedo gears - it's expensive - when I swapped my speedo gears, they said I had to have the larger one, but I just put the gear in my stock housing and all worked fine.
But I'm no expert - there may be other differences.
