Rear End Options

Ok, I'm looking to go to 3.73s real soon, but I have a couple questions.

First is, how much will highway mileage suffer (I'm on 2.73s or whatever the lowest ratio was now, ugh)? I don't plan on retaining the 700r4 long, but until I can afford a T-56 I'll be rocking it.

What would be the cheapest/easiest way to get 3.73s? I don't really need posi at first, but it couldn't hurt. There's a few camaros/birds in the local yard. I saw a list of what rears were in what cars somewhere but can't find it now.

I've not worked on rear wheel drive cars alot, so how hard is a rear end swap in a third gen? What special tools do I need? If I decide I don't wanna do it, any idea what a shop would charge?

Off topic, but anyone know where I can get some quality 1" spacers?

If your looking to go from a 2 series (3.08 down gears) to a 3 series (3.23 up gears) your going to either need to buy a shim or get a 3 series carrier.

You will definately see a difference in fuel economy with a gear jump like that, now i cant tell you how much but it will be noticable at the pump!

Cheapest way to get a set of gears is definately the local JY, your going to have to pull the covers and count the teeth to find the gear ratio though. If your lucky you may find a posi in there too!

cheapest way would be to ebay a diff or find one in the yard or on a classifieds board. I picked up mine on Cz28.com for $100 out of a Firehawk that a guy totalled. For the gears, hunt up a set from an S10. Don't install an open diff. It will be a waste of time.

the spline count doesnt matter for gears, it only maters for the posi. you have 28 spline axles so buy a 3 series posi for 28 spline axles. look for one out of 1 990 and up camaro/firebird. for gears as long as theyre for a 7.5/7.625" 10 bolt youre in business.
