Important Transmission Q!
Important Transmission Q!
The other day I was pulling out of a parking lot when all of the sudden my car (92rs) redlined. I pulled off to the side of the road, and my car had no gears. The engine was acting like it had nothing connected to it. It would redline in a heartbeat. I have a 700r4 with a B&M Shift kit, Stock Torque Converter. When I was on the side of the road it was making very wierd noises out of where the Torque converter is. I coasted my car into a parking lot and it died. Now when I try to start the car the starter is acting like it's just turning nothing. It's engaging properly and everything, but it just won't turn the engine over. I got underneath the car and I can turn the pressure plate and torque converter both ways-clockwise and counter clockwise- no problem. My question is: is it my torque converter that went out or what? Should I be able to turn the torque converter and pressure plate that way that easily? I would greatly appreciate any and all help that can be given to this problem. Thank you all very much.
It's possible the center broke out of the flex plate. If 'easily' means you don't need a shop towel between your hand and the flex plate, then yes, it is turning too easy. Have someone hit the starter while you watch the flex plate. If it spins without the engine turning over, then it is the flex plate.

It could be one of 2 things. Center broke from flexplate or crank snaped.
This sounds an awful like a crank failure, usually you get one hell of a racket when a flexplate comes apart but im not ruling that out.
Its time to pull the motor or drop the tranny!

seems to be a fairly common thing on any GM vehicle. I figure it could be from a crappy batch of flexplates (seems to me to be a mid-late 80s problem) or just an overall defect in design.
If you think about it, 'all' that power coming off the crank is trying to spin that TCC which doesnt want to move too easily and puts quite a bit of stress on the thin metal that makes up the flexplate. Eventually that metal is going to fatigue from all that twisting and start to crack.
